Let's talk meditative movement. Three types include yoga, tai chi, and qigong. These are sometimes referred to as “meditative movement” practices because they include both meditative elements (such as breath awareness) and physical ones.
Yoga, a discipline originating in India thousands of years ago and practiced widely throughout the world today, has been shown to promote healthful living.
Tai chi originated in China as a martial art, but it may also help to improve balance and prevent falls in older adults—and its benefits may extend even further. For instance, tai chi has been found useful for some painful conditions, such as low-back pain Fibromyalgia —as well as osteoarthritis.
Qigong is a Chinese practice that has been passed down for thousands of years. It can be practiced in many different ways.
While it hasn't been studied as extensively as yoga or tai chi, evidence suggests that qigong may prevent falls and improve symptoms of conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Parkinson's—and other major diseases.
